Why Study in S1 Product Design Innovation (Product Design Engineering) Program?

Study Program Characteristics

The Bachelor’s Degree Program in Product Design Engineering at Universitas Prasetiya Mulya positions itself as a product design program with a strong focus on technology-driven product development, characterized by an engineering-oriented approach and an emphasis on innovation. Designers and design engineers with competencies in designing technological products are increasingly essential in modern society to support a more meaningful, sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally friendly way of life.

Within our program, technological products are categorized into three main groups:

1. Consumer Products & Appliances

This category includes products that are directly used by consumers in their daily activities, such as electronic devices, household appliances, kitchen equipment, packaging, furniture, sports equipment, toys, and related products.

2. Assistive Technology & Medical Devices

Products in this category leverage technology to support people with special needs and/or function as medical devices. Examples include wheelchairs, mobility aids, injury rehabilitation equipment, hearing aids for the elderly, personal medical devices, wearables, and similar products.

3. Transportation (*)

Transportation-related products include bicycles, electric motorcycles, aerial drones, underwater drones, as well as transportation infrastructure components, such as the design of bus or train doors and seating systems that are friendly to the elderly and persons with disabilities.

(*) Note: Four-wheeled vehicles, buses, trains, and other large-scale transportation systems are not included within the scope of transportation design in this study program.

Business and Entrepreneurship

Within the Universitas Prasetiya Mulya ecosystem, business and entrepreneurship have always been regarded as the “holy grail,” including within our study program. Product development inherently involves the creation of added value and meaning, which are closely tied to business and entrepreneurial principles. By integrating competencies in product design and engineering with business and entrepreneurship knowledge and skills, graduates of this program are well prepared to pursue careers as professionals in established companies or as entrepreneurs across various fields of product development.

Opportunities and Collaboration

Students in our study program have access to a wide range of learning opportunities within the distinctive educational approach of Universitas Prasetiya Mulya, known as “Collaborative Learning by Enterprising.” These opportunities include:

– Collaborative courses with other study programs, involving direct interaction with industry partners in course projects.
– Participation in joint programs with overseas universities, such as the Design & Entrepreneurship program with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) (January 2020).
– Participation in product design competitions that foster cross-program and interdisciplinary student collaboration.
– Work-integrated learning programs, including On-the-Job Training, internships, and Co-op (Cooperative Education) options, where students engage directly with industry practitioners during their placements.
– Involvement in research and community service programs led by faculty members of the study program.

Facilities and Infrastructure

The general academic facilities available, including classrooms, the library, and the cafeteria, are of high quality and well maintained to ensure a clean and comfortable learning environment. In addition, student–faculty interactions are enhanced through the use of an online Learning Management System (LMS), which enables students to access course materials, submit assignments and quizzes, and utilize e-textbooks from a wide range of leading academic publishers.

Students in our study program have access to various studios, laboratories, and equipment located in the STEM Laboratory Building. The development of facilities and the addition of equipment are carried out progressively on an ongoing basis. Currently, the spaces and equipment available to support teaching activities and student product development include:
